A Year of Books
The Ultimate Gift for Book Lovers
A book is a great gift. We’ve always believed that. In fact we shout it from the mountain-tops. But do you know what’s an even better gift? A whole year of great books, chosen to expand your horizons, delight your senses, tickle your funny bone, capture your imagination and leave you with a shelf full of memories, ideas and stories.
Buy one of our Year of Books subscriptions and each month the lucky recipient (FYI it’s totally acceptable to buy one for yourself) will receive a brand new book, chosen by our booksellers for its storytelling flair, its originality, its must-haveness or its unputdownability (those are both real bookselling terms).
Choose from the following packages:
Our flagship fiction subscription package promises the latest and greatest in literary storytelling. Be the first to read the novels we think are destined to be nominated for the most prestigious fiction prizes, and discover those new voices you might otherwise have overlooked. This is quality fiction that will stand the test of time, in beautifully published first editions, which will sit proudly on your bookshelf for years to come.
If we’d been running A Year of Books last year, some titles we might have picked include our exclusive edition of Arundhati Roy’s The Ministry of Utmost Happiness and Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward.
Fiction in Translation
The Fiction in Translation subscription lovingly selects the finest books that our buyers have seen from around the world. Over the course of a year, you will have a chance to enjoy the best writing from Europe, South America, Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia. We approach this series with a sense of discovery, setting out to unearthing hidden gems of dazzling literary quality. Many of the authors may be new to you, but by the end of the year we hope you will have found your new favourite writers and opened up a world of incredible fiction.
If we’d been running A Year of Books last year, some titles we might have picked include Can You Hear Me by Elena Varvello and The End of Eddy by Edouard Louis.
Our paperback fiction package offers readers a compelling and diverse overview of the best fiction writing of the year. Expect smart page-turners and a series of books that spans centuries and continents, a series that brings together comedy and tragedy and plenty in between. The one thing they’ll have in common? They’ll all be great reads, books we love for their unforgettable characters, their exquisite turns of phrase, their breathless pace or their joyful originality – or often all four. These are must-read books that will stay with you long after you read them.
If we’d been running A Year of Books last year, some titles we might have picked include Autumn by Ali Smith, Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead.
Expand your mind with our selection of the very best of informative non-fiction. These are the books that represent the latest and most comprehensive thinking in their field – but always written (and selected) with a general reader in mind. We’ll choose from a wide pool of subject areas, across science, history, literary memoir, politics and psychology. By the end of the year you will have had access to some of the greatest minds of the day, and own a collection of books you’ll want to refer to again and again.
If we’d been running A Year of Books last year, some titles we might have picked include Admissions by Henry Marsh and Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge.
Our Children’s Classics are precisely that – beautifully published editions of classic children’s novels through the ages. We’ve chosen books primarily for children aged 9-12, but this is also a perfect gift for younger children, leaving them with a perfectly formed library to treasure for a lifetime, and, we hope, a lifelong love of reading.
This subscription will be a carefully curated mix of modern classics such as Harry Potter or Holes, along with long-established classics like The Hobbit, Black Beauty or Alice in Wonderland.
If you’re constantly surprised and fascinated by the world around you, a lover of true stories and real experiences, take an incredible journey with our non-fiction paperback subscription. Like the hardback package, these books are chosen for the general reader, picked out for their ability to take a subject you may know something or nothing about and open it up to you, in a way that leaves you feeling like you understand the world a little better by the end. You’ll meet memorable real life characters, and see the world from wholly new angles in this eye-opening and eclectic series of books.
If we’d been running A Year of Books last year, some titles we might have picked include The Good Immigrant ed. Nikesh Shukla and Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari.
Children's Picture Books
We love picture books – for their clever storytelling, witty rhymes and, of course, their gorgeous illustrations. Each month we’ll pick our favourite new or recent picture book (which is a hard task given the quality and range available) to send to our junior book lovers – guaranteeing a year of magical bedtime stories. Picture books are perfect gifts for children aged 3-5, but are also books that children love to return to again and again, making this a gift that will stand the test of time.
If we’d been running A Year of Books last year, some titles we might have picked include The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson and Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers. Books will be a mixture of hardbacks and paperbacks.
How it Works
When you purchase one of our A Year of Books subscriptions, you receive a beautiful presentation card and box to give to the person you’re buying it for. The card explains how to activate their subscription (it’s as simple as sending an email). Once their subscription is active, they’ll receive one book every month, carefully chosen and gift wrapped.
To purchase a subscription, email firstname.lastname@example.org, call us on 0207 440 3253 or 0207 440 3254 or see one of our booksellers in any of our shops.
We’ve included full terms and conditions below, and we’ve put together a few FAQs to help you understand how the service works and decide if it’s right for you. If you have any questions that are not answered by these, please feel free to get in touch with Ben and Adele at email@example.com, who will be happy to help you.
Can I tailor the book selection to the recipient’s/my reading preferences?
There isn’t currently the option to personalise the service. Each month our knowledgeable and experienced booksellers will be selecting the finest, most exciting titles, guaranteed to expand your horizons, delight your senses, tickle your funny bone and capture your imagination.
How do I pay?
Full payment is taken up front when you purchase the subscription in store or over the phone.
Is the service available to purchase online?
The service will not be for sale online until next year, however you can email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone us on 0207 440 3253/4 and pay using your credit or debit card. The number is manned during office hours but, if we are busy, please leave a message with your name and number and we will call you back as soon as we can.
What happens if the subscriber has already read the book you sent?
We’re pretty sure that you’ll love the books we’ve chosen but, if our book choice is unsatisfactory or the subscriber has already read it, books in perfect unread condition can be exchanged by post or in store. Subscribers can make a maximum of three exchanges during the year. Postage for the return of books and the sending of replacements is at the subscriber’s expense.
When can I start the subscription?
You can start the subscription at any time. It will run for 12 months from the date the recipient activates the subscription.
Can I cancel the subscription and get a refund?
The minimum term for a subscription is 12 (twelve) months. There is no refund other than during the initial ‘cooling off’ period.
There is a 14 (fourteen) day ‘cooling off’ period after the receipt of the first book in which a subscription may be cancelled and a full refund given. In the event of a cancellation, please notify email@example.com and return the first book to us in mint condition. The cost of the return is to be borne by the subscriber. On notice of cancellation and receipt of the book, a full refund will be made to the original cardholder.
Full details on cancellations and refunds can be found in the Terms and Conditions.
Is the service available worldwide?
Yes it is. International delivery is available for an extra £60 (which works out to just £5 per month) to Europe, and £100 (just over £8 per month) to the rest of the world.
When in the month will I receive my book?
We will aim to deliver your book as close to publication date as possible. If you haven't received your book after 7 working days past the publication date, please contact the A Year Of Books team on firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0207 440 3253/4 during office hours.
How does the subscriber activate the subscription?

1.4 We will not be responsible if you fail to receive the written confirmation because you have supplied us with an incorrect postal address or email address. We reserve the right not to accept or process your order for any reason. All orders are subject to validation checks and authorisation by your payment card issuer. If we do not accept your order and your credit/debit card has already been debited, we will notify you and refund your card in full immediately.

2.2 If you have ordered a subscription for someone else, you will receive a postal acknowledgement within 14 days or an email acknowledgement within 7 days (if you gave us your email address).
3.1 We will deliver each book to the address you notify to us when you place your order. Your subscription will start with the next available title; please allow up to six weeks for delivery. You agree that we will not be responsible for failure to deliver the book if you have supplied us with an incorrect address. We reserve the right to dispose of incorrectly addressed parcels and their contents without an obligation to refund you or any other person if they are returned to us and despite efforts to contact you we do not receive correct address details.
3.2 As our team is looking to select the most appropriate books for you, a book could be published at any point in a given month. Your book will be despatched via standard post (3-7 working days) on or directly after the publication date. Please note publication dates are sometimes subject to change, in which case we will let you know of any delays to your order. If you have not received a book by the end of the given month, please contact us at email@example.com.
3.3 We will not be liable to you for any delay in delivery or non-delivery of books in the following circumstances: where the issuer of your payment card refuses to authorise payment to us; where such delay or failure is due to circumstances beyond our control or the control of our sub-contractors and agents, including but not restricted to electricity power failure, utilities failure, failure of telecommunications links, failure of transport infrastructure, fire, flood, war, government act, natural disasters, legislative constraints, strikes, labour disputes or malicious damage involving employees.

3.5 Each book will be your responsibility from the time we deliver it to the address you gave us.
4. Refunds and returns
4.1 If you have any questions or complaints about the condition of a book, please contact us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 says goods must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality.
4.2 While we endeavour to select appropriate titles within each subscription type, we do recognise that not every book may be suitable for a reader. With this in mind, we allow a subscriber to exchange a selection up to 3 (three) times over the course of each 12 (twelve) month subscription. There is no exchange for titles in a different subscription, cash or gift card.
4.3 We do not exclude or limit in any way our liability to you where it would be unlawful to do so including; any damages arising from death or personal injury caused by our negligence or that of any of our employees, agents or subcontractors; fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; breach of your legal rights in relation to the products and for defective products under the Consumer Protection Act 1987.We are not liable for business losses. We only supply products for domestic and private use. If you use the products for any commercial, business or re-sale purpose we will have no liability to you for any loss of profit, loss of business, business interruption, or loss of business opportunity.
5.1 The minimum term for a subscription is 12 (twelve) months.
5.2 You can always end your contract with us. Your rights when you end the contract will depend on how we are performing and when you decide to end the contract:
5.3 If you are ending the contract for a reason set out at (a) to (e) below the contract will end immediately and we will refund you in full for any books which have not been despatched and you may also be entitled to compensation. The reasons are:
- we have told you about an upcoming change to the books or these terms which you do not agree to;
- we have told you about an error in the price or description of the books you have ordered and you do not wish to proceed;
- there is a risk that supply of the books may be significantly delayed because of events outside our control;
- we have suspended supply of the books for technical reasons, or notify you we are going to suspend them for technical reasons, in each case for a period of more than one month; or
- you have a legal right to end the contract because of something we have done wrong.
5.4 For most products bought over the telephone or by exchange of emails you have a legal right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 to change your mind within 14 days and receive a refund. As a gesture of goodwill, we have extended this right to our personal customers who sign the contract at one of our shops. You therefore have until 14 days after the day you (or someone you nominate) receives the first book to cancel.
5.5 You still have the right to end the subscription before it is completed where we are not at fault and you have not changed your mind within 14 days, however no refund will be made to you in respect of the remainder of your subscription period.
5.6 To end the contract with us, please contact us using the details given above.
5.7 If you end the contract for any reason after a book has been dispatched, you must return it to us within 14 days. We will only pay the costs of return:
- if the book is damaged or misdescribed; or
- if you are ending the contract because we have told you of an upcoming change to the product or these terms, an error in pricing or description, a delay in delivery due to events outside our control or because you have a legal right to do so as a result of something we have done wrong.
In all other circumstances you must pay the costs of return.
5.8 If you are exercising your right to change your mind:
a. We may reduce your refund to reflect any reduction in the value of the book, if this has been caused by your handling it in a way which would not be permitted in a shop. If we refund you the price paid before we are able to inspect the book and later discover you have handled it in an unacceptable way, you must pay us an appropriate amount.
b. The maximum refund for delivery costs will be the costs of delivery by the least expensive delivery method we offer.
5.9 We may end the contract for a product at any time by writing to you if:
- you do not make any payment to us when it is due and you still do not make payment within 14 days of us reminding you that payment is due;
- you do not, within a reasonable time of us asking for it, provide us with information that is necessary for us to provide the products, or
- you do not, within a reasonable time, allow us to deliver the products to you or collect them from us.
5.10 If we end the contract in the situations set out in 5.9 above we will refund any money you have paid in advance for books that we have not delivered but we may deduct or charge you one quarter of the annual subscription cost as reasonable compensation for the net costs we will incur as a result of your breaking the contract.
5.11 We may write to you to let you know that we are going to stop providing the subscription service. We will let you know at least three months in advance of our stopping the supply of the product and will refund any sums you have paid in advance for books which will not be delivered.
6.1 Prices displayed on the subscriptions section of the website will prevail at all times. Prices quoted include UK standard rate second class delivery charges. Payment for a one year subscription is made as a single one-off payment at point of purchase in one of our stores or by telephone.
6.2 Although we try to ensure that all prices are accurate, errors may occur. If we discover an error in the price of your order, we will inform you as soon as possible. You will have the option of reconfirming your order at the correct price or cancelling it. If we are unable to contact you, we will treat the order as cancelled. We will refund you in full if you cancel the order and have already paid.
6.3 If you are under 18 or are not using your own credit/debit card to pay for the subscription, you must ask the permission of the credit/debit card holder before making payment. By paying you are confirming that you have obtained the express prior permission of the credit/debit card holder.
7. Use of Personal Information
7.1 We use the personal and transactional information (e.g. name, address, e-mail address, credit card details) (“Personal Information”) you supply to us in order:
- to supply the products to you;
- to process your payment for the products; and
- if you agreed to this during the order process, to give you information about similar products that we provide, but you may stop receiving this at any time by contacting us.
7.2 We may pass your personal information to credit reference agencies. Where we extend credit to you for the products we may pass your personal information to credit reference agencies and they may keep a record of any search that they do.
7.3 We will only give your personal information to third parties where the law either requires or allows us to do so.
8.1 These Terms and Conditions are governed by English law. You hereby irrevocably submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts notwithstanding the jurisdiction where you are based.
8.2 We may transfer our rights and obligations under these terms to another organisation. We will always tell you in writing if this happens and we will ensure that the transfer will not affect your rights under the contract.
8.3 You may only transfer your rights or your obligations under these terms to another person if we agree to this in writing.
8.4 This contract is between you and us. No other person shall have any rights to enforce any of its terms. Neither of us will need to get the agreement of any other person in order to end the contract or make any changes to these terms.
8.5 Each of the paragraphs of these terms operates separately. If any court or relevant authority decides that any of them are unlawful, the remaining paragraphs will remain in full force and effect.
8.6 If we do not insist immediately that you do anything you are required to do under these terms, or if we delay in taking steps against you in respect of your breaking this contract, that will not mean that you do not have to do those things and it will not prevent us taking steps against you at a later date. For example, if you miss a payment and we do not chase you but we continue to provide the products, we can still require you to make the payment at a later date.
