Andrew Miller: The Crossing

Wednesday 2nd September 2015 7pm - 8pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Chargeable Event

Winner of the Costa Book of the Year, the IMPAC and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, Andrew Miller comes to Foyles to discuss his new novel, The Crossing.

Having received great praise from critics and readers alike for his assured, profound, deeply moving literary fiction, Bristol-born Miller won the Costa for 2011's celebrated Pure, set amidst the graveyards of eighteenth-century France, and placed on the Booker shortlist for Oyxgen in 2001. And yet Miller came late to the idea of writing as a career, having said that he "just genuinely didn't get the idea of school".

Informed and astute, Miller's prose takes us now on the emotional and physical journey of Maud, an emotionally cool scientist who starts a family with her musician husband, Tim. Restoring an old yacht with the dream of one day sailing, mother, father and child together, the family is rocked by tragedy. Only Maud doesn't seem to react.

Apart, unfathomable, and increasingly obsessed with the idea of sailing by herself across the Atlantic, Maud dashes others' attempts to reach out across tragedy with her apparent ability to survive alone. As she pushes herself on toward an impossible voyage, Miller weaves around her an hypnotic story of motherhood, distance and empathy, and the lure and power of the sea.

Come to hear more from this master storyteller as he presents his latest novel in conversation with journalist Alex Clark, discussing his celebrated prose and the journey to becoming an award-winning author, with a signing session at the end of the event.
