Islamophobia, Extremism and the Domestic War on Terror: a discussion with Owen Jones and Arun Kundnani
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE DATE OF THIS EVENT HAS CHANGED FROM THAT ORIGINALLY ADVERTISED
Foyles and Verso present Arun Kundnani, author of new book The Muslims are Coming! in conversation with Owen Jones, journalist and author of Chavs.
Domestic surveillance has mushroomed. MI5 has doubled in size in just five years. British police compiled secret suspect lists of more than eight thousand al-Qaeda 'sympathisers', including nearly three hundred children, in an operation investigating potential extremists. The latest front in UK counterterrorism is the 'homegrown enemy': domestic terror suspects subject to increasing levels of police surveillance.
Kundnani presents these findings as part of his critique on the root of our domestic anti-terror policies, exposing the anxiety, intolerance and racism that inform them, and argues that the War on Terror could not be sustained without the racialized dehumanization of its Muslim victims. Join him in conversation at Foyles as he discusses the impact of surveillance on Muslim communities, and the rising tide of Islamophobia across Europe.
