Diana Athill: Alive, Alive Oh! in conversation with Erica Wagner
Join us for an evening of conversation with one of the most remarkable literary women of the century, Diana Athill. Now in her ninety-ninth year, Diana’s career in publishing played a crucial role in shaping the literary landscape, and her two novels and nine autobiographical works have won her several awards and an OBE.
Her latest essay collection Alive, Alive Oh! looks back over defining moments in her life upon taking the decision to move to a retirement home, describing in detail the exactly layout of her childhood garden, her experiences in the First and Second World Wars, and her holidays in Europe as a young woman. In the chapter from which the book draws its title, she describes her pregnancy at the age of 43, losing the baby and almost her life – and her gratitude and joy on discovering she had survived.
Don’t miss this opportunity for an intimate audience with a towering figure in Twentieth and Twenty-First Century literature. She’ll be joined by literary editor and writer Erica Wagner for a conversation about her new essay collection, her life and works, followed by a chance for the audience to ask their own questions Signed copies of Alive, Alive Oh! will be available to purchase on the night too.
