Douglas Newton - The Darkest Days: The Truth Behind Britain's Rush to War, 1914 - In association with Bristol Festival of Ideas

Monday 22nd September 2014 6:30pm - 7:30pm Bristol, Foyles, 6 Quakers Friars, Cabot Circus, Bristol, BS1 3BU Literary Event, Free Event

Historian Douglas Newton recounts the hidden history of Britain's decision to enter the Great War: Drawing on a wealth of archival material, Newton pays particular attention to the widespread and vehement opposition to the war, both inside parliament and in the country at large, and argues that Asquith, Edward Grey and Winston Churchill colluded against the wishes and instincts of many of their parliamentary colleagues, to bring the country into the war by any means necessary.

Part of Bristol 2014.

Douglas Newton was the Associate Professor of History at University of Western Sydney. He is the author of British Policy and the Weimar Republic 1918-19; Germany 1918-1945: From Days of Hope to Years of Horror; and British Labour, European Socialism and the Struggle for Peace 1889-1914.
