For six nights, from Monday 26th until Saturday 31st January, Foyles opens its doors to MOBO-winning contemporary jazz group Empirical for this new and radically open approach to developing the music for their next album.
Drawing on the model of 1960s jazz bands, Empirical will play not one but six gigs of new music from their fifth album, which will be recorded the week following their Foyles sessions.
Taking inspiration from the idea of connectivity, Empirical will play a set of their latest work for your enjoyment. Then, at the end of each performance, the audience is invited to discuss and give feedback to the band.
This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to directly contribute to the making of Empirical's new work - so come along, and connect!

This was a really enjoyable event, both for the quality of the music, heavily influenced by mid-period Coltrane, and for the interactive element, which solicited audience reviews of individual songs and suggestions for a title of Empirical's forthcoming release. I am regularly scanning the Net for release of same, with the hope of invoking intellectual copyright if my suggestion is used (joke!).
The polyrhythmic drumming, reminiscent of Elvin Jones, was a particular highlight.
