Fiction Uncovered

Fiction Uncovered logosWe're incredibly excited about Fiction Uncovered, a promotion dedicated
to celebrating fiction from some of our best contemporary British writers.

Katy Guest of the Independent on Sunday describes Fiction Uncovered as 'the Mercury Prize for books, because it celebrates writers whom keen
readers might know about, and introduces some whom we probably don't.'

The eight titles for 2013 were chosen by a panel of judges headed by the Costa Novel Award-shortlisted Louise Doughty, along with Sandeep Mahal, Programme Manager at charity, The Reading Agency, Lynne Hatwell, who blogs at dovegreyreader, and writer Courttia Newland.

Louise Doughty said of the panel's choices, 'It was a great pleasure to be Chair of Judges for the Fiction Uncovered
promotion, which is one of the most exciting book promotions to be launched in recent years. Fiction Uncovered is particularly important because it is the only promotion that is specialising in mid-career authors, authors who have established themselves to a greater or lesser degree but who still need that bit more investment in order to become the big literary names of the future. There are a number of large literary prizes that tend to favour the widely acknowledged stars of the book world and multiple awards for debuts - but a huge number of good novelists fall into the category in between. Fiction Uncovered says something very simple and very important to the reading public - these are good writers you really should take a look at - and as such has a vital role to play in helping good authors come to the attention of new readers.'

Kirsty Logan's second novel, The Gloaming, is a swirling tale threaded through with magic, heartbreak, love and mermaids. It is studded with evocative but perhaps unfamiliar words, adding atmosphere, mood and expression. Exclusively for Foyles, she has written about some of these Scottish words, that head up each chapter of the book.
