Granta 122: Betrayal - The London Launch with Samantha Harvey and John Burnside.

Wednesday 30th January 2013 6:30pm - 8pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Free Event

Granta logoThe latest issue of Granta explores the sting of betrayal by a loved one, our leaders and from within our own hearts. Join Granta, Samantha Harvey and John Burnside for readings and conversation that mark the launch of Granta 121. A drinks reception will follow.

John Burnside teaches at the University of St Andrews. His most recent books are Black Cat Bone, a poetry collection, and A Summer of Drowning, a novel. The speaker in Burnside's poem stands in a snowy, rural landscape trying to make a phone call. He is seemingly unburdened, has neither miles to go nor promises to keep; he wants only to connect - and only for a moment - before fading back into a manner of living that renders us all as much machine as human.

Samantha Harvey was born in England in 1975. Her first novel, The Wilderness, was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction, longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award, and won the Betty Trask Prize. Her new novel, All Is Song, was published in January 2013. She was recently named by The Culture Show as one of the 12 Best New British Novelists.

Her story tells of a small island off the coast of England undergoes a horrific industrial explosion that claims one fourth of its population. As anniversaries of the accident come and go, the attending dignitaries decrease in stature,
