Dan Hancox - The Village Against the World

Tuesday 15th October 2013 6:30pm - 7:30pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Chargeable Event

Sixty miles from Seville, deep in the Andalusian countryside, lies the tiny village of Marinaleda, which for 30 years has been the centre of a struggle to create a communist utopia. Under the leadership of charismatic mayor Sánchez Gordillo, christened the Robin Hood of Spain for his supermarket raids to feed the local poor, the village has seen almost full employment, in a country where 27% of the population is out of work.

Dan Hancox discusses his new book The Village Against The World with Paul Mason, BBC Economics editor and author of Why It's Still Kicking Off Everywhere, for the first in a new series of events with Verso Books at Foyles. In an eye-opening conversation, they explore the successes and failures of this radical experiment in township, and how one small village is having a huge impact on the course of left-wing movements in Spain.
