Joanna Lumley

About The Author

Joanna Lumley Model, actress, author and human rights activist, Joanna Lumley was born in India in 1946 and spent her early childhood in the Far East, where her father was a major in the British Indian army. She was later educated in England. She started her career as a model and was famously a muse for June Muir. Her first acting roles came in the late 1960s, and included an advert for Nimble bread and as a Bond girl in Her Majesty's Secret Service. Her breakthrough came in 1976, when she played Purdey in The New Avengers; other successes followed, including as Sapphire in Sapphire and Steel in 1979 and as Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous in 1992. She has also appeared on stage, including in November 2011 as Queen Eleanor in The Lion in Winter.

A keen traveller, over recent years Joanna has presented a number of travel documentaries, including Joanna Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights and Joanna Lumley's Nile. With her distinctive voice, she has also had great success as a voice-over artist, is famously the voice of AOL and has narrated several audio books. She is also a human rights activist, most notably for the Gurkha Justice Campaign in 2009, which culminated in the government allowing Gurkhas who had served in the army the right to remain in the UK. She was awarded the OBE in 1995.


Joanna's books include a study of wartime romance, Forces Sweethearts, and In the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon, in which she retraces her grandparents' steps on a trip they made through Bhutan in 1931. At volume of memoirs, No Room for Secrets, was published in 2005. In her latest illustrated autiobiography, Absolutely (2011), she brings the compelling story of her diverse life up to date.
