Book Launch: Lily Forbes - Growing Up Under the Mango Tree

Friday 6th June 2014 6pm - 7:45pm Bristol, Foyles, 6 Quakers Friars, Cabot Circus, Bristol, BS1 3BU Literary Event, Free Event

Growing Up Under the Mango Tree is a story of one girl's dream to escape poverty and fulfil her ambitions, set against the rich social and political backdrop of war-torn Malaya. From the trials of smallpox and poverty to a career as a cadet in the Indian National Army, and the author's subsequent return to Malaysia, this is a tale of forbidden love, a passion for food, and one person's tenacity to pursue dreams despite her surroundings.

Lily Forbes grew up in Colonial Malaysia as the middle child of a large family. After spending her adolescent years in Pondicherry, South India, in 1969 she realised her childhood dream of coming to England, where she qualified first as a general nurse and then a midwife. Since retiring from her medical career, she has pursued her other dreams of travel and cooking. She divides her time between Bristol and Manchester.
