The Spoke in the Wheel: Live Poetry Evening

Thursday 30th June 2016 6:30pm - 8pm Cabot Circus, Bristol Literary Event, Free Event

We are thrilled to be joined by local poetry organisation, The Spoke, who will be performing live music and poetry in store.

Talented poetry quartet Paul Deaton, Elizabeth Parker, Claire Williamson and Bob Walton will be accompanied by musician Red Deer Sleeping who sings elemental nature inspired songs on ukulele and cuatro, based on early 20th Century, Victorian & Romantic, and Haiku poems.

PAUL DEATON was shortlisted for the Bridport Prize in 2008 and is regularly published in The Spectator. His poems have also appeared in anthologies such as The Cockermouth Poets, The Echoing Gallery and Ice, and he has just published Black Knight.

ELIZABETH PARKER writes almost full-time while working as a personal English tutor. She has been published in Magma and Raceme and was shortlisted for The Bridport Poetry Prize and the recent Melita Hume Prize, and her most recent publication is Antinopolis.

CLAIRE WILLIAMSON has published two narrative poetry collections, Ride On and The Soulwater Pool. Her recent collaboration with composer Mark Lawrence, Home by Christmas has been nominated for the British Composer Awards 2015. She is Programme Leader for Metanoia Institute’s MSc in Creative Writing for Therapeutic Purposes and has won an Arts Council award for her work. She most recently published Split Ends.

BOB WALTON won the Welsh Arts Council’s New Poet Award back in 1978 with his collection, Workings. He stopped writing for many years but resumed by working with artists in other media – dance, music, film – recording a CD, Nomad ’64, with cult band Mopti. A lifelong teacher, he is currently working towards his PhD and teaches Creative Writing at Cardiff University.

Spice up your week with this entertaining afternoon of music and poetry.

Venue: Foyles, Bridgestowe Street, Cabot Circus, BS1 3BH
