Local Author Reception

Tuesday 23rd February 2016 6:30pm - 8pm Grand Central Birmingham Literary Event, Free Event

As part of our quest to unite great writers with passionate readers, we are hosting our first ever Local Author Reception. Birmingham is home to some fantastic literary talent and we have carefully selected four great local authors who cover a range of genres from Literary Non-Fiction to Poetry to Crime Fiction. We are delighted to welcome Luke Kennard, Fiona Joseph, Catherine O’Flynn and Mick Scully.

Luke Kennard is a poet and critic and teaches creative writing at the University of Birmingham. His second collection, The Harbour Beyond the Movie, was shortlisted for the Forward Prize. In 2014 he was named as one of the Poetry Book Society's Next Generation Poets and impressively, he has just been appointed Canal Laureate.

Fiona Joseph is a writer, publisher and public speaker. She has written a bestselling biography of Beatrice Cadbury, the radical daughter of the famous chocolate manufacturer. Comforts for the Troops, her novel based on Cadbury women employees in WW1, was published last year.

Catherine O'Flynn's debut novel, What Was Lost, won the Costa First Novel Award and was longlisted for the Man Booker and Orange prizes. She published The News Where You Are in 2010, and Mr Lynch's Holiday in 2013, both to great acclaim. She is a Birmingham local and writes regularly in newspapers and for BBC Radio.

Mick Scully lives and works in Birmingham, and the city's underworld inspires his fiction. He is best known for short story collection Little Moscow but he also broke into fiction with his début novel, The Norway Room.

The evening will kick off with the writers introducing themselves and giving a short reading from one of their titles. Then there will be the opportunity to meet the authors, mingle and enjoy some complimentary refreshments. We will be selling a selection of their titles on the night and the authors will be happy to sign copies.

Join us in celebrating the literary talent right on our doorstep with this mid-week treat.

Venue: Foyles, Grand Central Birmingham, B2 4BF

Tickets: Free. To reserve, simply email events@foyles.co.uk.

This event is programmed in partnership with Writing West Midlands

Please note, no physical tickets will be issued, the email confirmation you receive is proof of your booking.
