The Forward Prizes for Poetry

Forward Prizes for PoetryThe Forward Prizes for Poetry were created by publisher William Sieghart in 1991, with the first awards made the following year. There are three awards: Best Collection (winning £10,000), the Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection (£5000) and Best Single Poem (£1000). All are open to poets from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

The Prizes are administered by the Forward Arts Foundation, which also coordinates National Poetry Day. Each year, poems by the winners and shortlisted authors, along with a selection of other entries highly commended by the judges, are published in the annual Forward Book of Poetry.

Sean O'Brien is the only poet to win one of the awards more than once: Best Collection in 1995, 2001 and 2007; he also took the Best Single Poem award in 2006. The other poets to have been honoured more than once are Robin Robertson (Best First Collection in 1997, Best Collection in 2006 and Best Single Poem in 2009), John Burnside (Best First Collection in 1993 and Best Collection in 2009) and Kathleen Jamie (Best Single Poem in 1997 and Best Collection in 2004).

The 2105 shortlists were announced on 8th June. The winners, announced at the Southbank Centre on 28th September, were:

* Claudia Rankine for Best Collection for Citizen: An American Lyric.

* Mona Arshi for Best First Collection, for Small Hands

* Claire Harman, for Best Single Poem for “The Mighty Hudson”
