Wellcome Book Prize

Wellcome Book PrizeThe Wellcome Book Prize was set up in 2009 to stimulate interest and debate about medical science through books and reading. Any book on the topic published in the previous calendar year, whether fiction or non-fiction, is eligible, as are books translated from languages other than English. (Academic titles, picture books and diet books are not eligible.)

Turn of Mind, Alice LaPlante's thriller in which a once brilliant surgeon suffering from dementia is accused of murder, is the only fiction winner of the prize so far.

The 2016 winner was It's All in Your Head by Suzanne O'Sullivan.  Joan Bakewell chaired the judging panel.

The 2017 winner, announced 24 April, was Maylis de Kerangal’s Mend the Living, making it the first translated text, and first French author to win the coveted prize and only the second novel to win in the history of the prize.

The judging panel is chaired by Scottish crime writer Val McDermid, alongside Simon Baron-Cohen, Gemma Cairney, Tim Lewens and Di Speirs.
