The Branford Boase Award

The Branford Boase Award is awarded annually for an outstanding first novel to a first-time writer of a book for young people. At the same time, it marks the important contribution of the editor in identifying and nurturing new talent.

Henrietta Branford was a gifted novelist for young people. During her short career she won the Smarties Prize in 1994 for Dimanche Diller and the Guardian Fiction Prize in 1998 for Fire, Bed and Bone; she was twice shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Prize, in 1994 and 1997. Her progress and development as a writer was watched with interest by publishers, critics and fellow writers alike.

Wendy Boase, Editorial Director of Walker Books, and one of its founders, was a passionate children's book editor wholly committed to developing new writers and nursing them through their early writing careers. She is credited with bringing on many new talents. She and Henrietta worked together on a number of her books, a partnership that was warmly appreciated by Henrietta.

Both Henrietta and Wendy died of cancer in early 1999. The Branford Boase Award celebrates and encourages the crucial early development of new writing talent. Running alongside it is the Henrietta Branford Writing Competition, which encourages writing talent in under 18s.

The Award is the joint idea of Julia Eccleshare and Anne Marley. Julia is the Children's Book Editor of the Guardian newspaper; chair of the Nestlé Rowntree Smarties Book Prize and a regular contributor to Radio 4's Front Row and Open Book programmes. Anne is the joint founder of Authors Aloud UK, an agency specialising in arranging author visits to schools, libraries and festivals and has served on many children’s book awards, including the CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Awards. She was recently awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for Services to Local Government.

The 2016 winner was Horatio Clare with Aubrey and the Terrible Yoot.

The 2017 longlist was announced on 15th February. The judging panel is chaired by Julia Eccleshare, who said, 'Once again our longlist includes an enormously varied collection of interesting, well-written books. We read fantasy stories, mysteries, contemporary adventures, romances, books that made us laugh and books that made us hopeful; and we met characters who broaden our knowledge and understanding of the world. The variety and quality of the books submitted demonstrate the current healthy, boundary-expanding state of UK children’s literature.'
