In the midst of Crouch End in north London stands a Modernist masterpiece. Designed by young architect Reginal Uren, Hornsey Town Hall was the first major UK building to be constructed in the Modernist style. When Hornsey became part of Haringey in the 1960s, the building lost its municipal functions and it has not been in public use since the mid-1980s. Artist-photographer Roelof Bakker became an unofficial artist-in-residence in 2010, after he approached Haringey Council to explore the vacated spaces both in photographs and on video. This resulted in the exhibition Still, at Hornsey Town Hall in November 2010.
Bakker consequently invited writers from around the world to select a photograph from this project and write a story taking the photograph to a new place with a fresh meaning - away from the original physical setting at Hornsey Town Hall. The result is Still, a collaborative literary art book/anthology and the Gallery and Café at Foyles present an exhibition of original photographs alongside written excerpts from the publication. Competition Earlier in the year Foyles invited budding writers to create their very own short story based on one of Roelof's photos, the winner receiving a signed original print from the show, as well as having their entry displayed on the Gallery walls and hosted on the Foyles website.
