Exhibition: Still by Roelof Bakker: a photographic exploration of vacated spaces at Hornsey Town Hall, with excerpts from stories inspired by the photographs Back to Events »

Tuesday 18th September 2012 9:30am - Tuesday 30th October 2012 9pm Charing Cross Road Exhibition, Free Event

In the midst of Crouch End in north London stands a Modernist masterpiece. Designed by young architect Reginal Uren, Hornsey Town Hall was the first major UK building to be constructed in the Modernist style. When Hornsey became part of Haringey in the 1960s, the building lost its municipal functions and it has not been in public use since the mid-1980s. Artist-photographer Roelof Bakker became an unofficial artist-in-residence in 2010, after he approached Haringey Council to explore the vacated spaces both in photographs and on video. This resulted in the exhibition Still, at Hornsey Town Hall in November 2010.

Bakker consequently invited writers from around the world to select a photograph from this project and write a story taking the photograph to a new place with a fresh meaning - away from the original physical setting at Hornsey Town Hall. The result is Still, a collaborative literary art book/anthology and the Gallery and Café at Foyles present an exhibition of original photographs alongside written excerpts from the publication.

You can find out more about Roelef Bakker and his work at his website. You can also see more at the Negative Press London website.

Competition

Earlier in the year Foyles invited budding writers to create their very own short story based on one of Roelof's photos, the winner receiving a signed original print from the show, as well as having their entry displayed on the Gallery walls and hosted on the Foyles website. Judging is currently in progress and results will be announced shortly.

Venues

Tuesday 18 - Sunday 30 September: The Gallery at Foyles, Third Floor, Charing Cross Road
Monday 17 September - Tuesday 30 October: The Café at Foyles, First Floor, Charing Cross Road

Please note that the Gallery may be closed when instore meetings and events are taking place. Also, owing to the arrangement of the Café, viewing of the artwork may be restricted in that location.
