Bookshop Barnie: Christmas Balloon Debate

Come and take part in a Battle of the Books with our prestigious panel of contestants

What is the greatest book in the world? In this year's Bookshop Barnie Christmas Balloon Debate a prestigious panel of contestants, including some of the biggest names in present-day writing and academia, will attempt to answer this momentous question, each championing their own title. Come and join us for an evening of lively, good-humoured debate and a glass or two of wine, and the chance to see if your favourite title proves to be a contender for the coveted Bookshop Barnie crown.

The night's panellists include:

  • David Aaronovitch, columnist for The Times, on Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron
  • Matthew Taylor, RSA Chief Executive, on Charles Dickens' Great Expectations
  • Rachel Armstrong, TED fellow and science writer, on William Bryant Logan's Dirt
  • Richard Swan, teacher and medievalist, on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
  • Eamonn Butler, Director of the Adam Smith Institute, on Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations
  • Parminder Bahra, Executive Producer at The Wall Street Journal Europe, on Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
  • Carole Stone, Chairman of YouGovStone and networker extraordinaire, on Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People
