Sue Shephard - From Cod to Callaloo: The Story of Bristol Through Food and Wine (in association with Bristol Festival of Ideas)

Tuesday 5th November 2013 6:30pm - 7:30pm Bristol, Foyles, 6 Quakers Friars, Cabot Circus, Bristol, BS1 3BU Literary Event, Free Event

Sue Shephard takes a different approach to history: through the food we eat. In her new book, From Cod to Callaloo: The Story of Bristol Through Food and Wine, she explores Bristol's place at the table: from the primitive diet of hunter-gatherers to the sophisticated table of Roman occupiers, from the origins of bread and the first tomatoes to post-war bananas and today's global cuisine. She describes how food and drink have been traded, cooked and eaten, and reprises recipes for salted cod, mulligatawny soup and (Bristol's particular passion) turtle. Aphrodisiacs, adulterations, Norman 'mock food', sherry, ale, spitdogs, bread riots and Berni Inns - it's a history that belongs to everyone. Join Foyles and Bristol Festival of Ideas to celebrate the book's launch.
