Cityread is a London-wide reading festival that unites the capital every April with the aim of getting people all over the city reading the same book. This year's title is Louisa Young's My Dear, I Wanted to Tell You, a World War I novel of love and war, and how they affect those left behind as well as those who fight.
To launch this year's festival, Foyles have teamed up with Cityread to give away 1,914 copies of the novel at St Pancras International. Visitors and commuters passing the specially commissioned World War I enlisting station, situated next to our bookshop in the Arcade, will get a chance to pick up a copy of the book and take a glimpse into the world its characters inhabit, brought to life by immersive theatre company Look Left Look Right.
Cityread work with all 33 London library services as well as museums, book shops, cinemas and more to run a programme of over 700 events in every corner of the capital throughout April. This year, for the first time, children are also encouraged to participate in the festival by reading Michael Morpurgo's Private Peaceful.
Key events for 2014 include a Family Day at the Museum of London Docklands on 5th April; Louisa Young in conversation with Kirsty Lang at the British Library on 14th April and a panel discussion closing event at Swiss Cottage Library on 29th April.
