Picador Classic Day: With Alan Hollinghurst, Carol Ann Duffy, John Lanchester, William Fiennes, Philip Hensher, John Banville and more

Saturday 7th February 2015 10:45am - 6:30pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Chargeable Event

To celebrate the launch of the Picador Classic series, from one of the world's finest literary publishers, we're holding a full day of events exploring classic literature from all angles, hosted by journalist Alex Clark.

A stellar list of writers is already confirmed to take part, including Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and Man Booker Prize winners Alan Hollinghurst and John Banville, as well as the Man Booker-shortlisted Philip Hensher, Samuel Johnson Prize- and Costa Biography Award-shortlisted William Fiennes, Ross Raisin, who was included on Granta magazine's list of 20 Best Young British Novelists in 2013, and celebrated author and journalist John Lanchester.

We recommend you book early to avoid disappointment.

The schedule for the day is:

  • 9.30-10.45am Complimentary breakfast (tea/coffee and croissant)
  • 10.45am: Canon Fodder: What is a Classic?
    Alex Clark chairs a discussion with novelist and critic Philip Hensher, novelist Ross Raisin and Catherine Taylor (Deputy Director of English PEN), who commissioned the introductions for the Picador Classic list.
  • 12 noon Under the Influence: John Banville and John Lanchester discuss literary predecessors
  • 2.00pm Listening to the Laureate: Carol Ann Duffy reads from her seminal collection The World's Wife
  • 3.15pm How to See the World: William Fiennes on The Snow Geese
  • 4.30pm Lines of Beauty: The Work of Alan Hollinghurst
  • 5.45-6.30pm Complimentary drink & a chance to mingle
