Undiscovered Voices: Getting into Children's Books with the SCBWI
Are you a children's writer or illustrator looking to get a foot in the door? Wondering what publishers and agents are looking for, or looking for advice on how to take your fiction and illustration for children and young adults to the next level?
To celebrate their Undiscovered Voices initiative, The Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (British Isles) present this unmissable evening of insight from industry experts as they discuss what makes a good book great, and how to get ahead in children's publishing. Presenting two panels—one for writers and one for illustrators, with plenty of room for crossover between the two—the SCBWI introduce twelve of the top UK agents, editors and art directors in this incredibly rare opportunity of an event.
Discussing trends in children's publishing and answering audience questions are this year's Undiscovered Voices judges:
- Jon Appleton, Hodder
- Ali Ardington, Stripes Publishing
- Ed Burns, Advocate Art Agency
- Barry Cunningham, Chicken House
- Sheri Gee, Folio Society
- Jodie Hodges, United Agents
- Rachel Mann, Simon & Schuster
- Polly Nolan, The Greenhouse Literary Agency
- Anna Power, Johnson & Alcock
- Kate Shaw, The Viney Agency
- Will Steele, Random House
- Caroline Walsh, David Higham Associates
An initiative to discover new, fresh voices in children's writing and illustration, Undiscovered Voices operates an open submission competition for unpublished and un-agented practitioners. Collected in an anthology published every two years, the initiative has, since its first anthology in 2008, seen 26 of its 48 featured authors receive publishing contracts—resulting in more than 120 books put into print.
