The Witching Hour: A Halloween Special with Louise Welsh, Neil Spring, Andrew Michael Hurley, Carolyne Larrington, Stav Sherez and Sam Leith

Friday 30th October 2015 7pm - 8pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Free Event

It's all treat and no trick this Halloween with our Witching Hour panel event - a hand-picked cabal of writers specialising in the supernatural, the ghastly and the downright weird. Come along in (optional) fancy dress to hear our speakers at this most terrifying time of year as they present their latest dabblings in the arcane, the otherworldly and the eminently readable.

Join author Neil Spring as he presents The Watchers, the hotly-anticipated follow-up to his breakout bestselling debut novel The Ghost Hunters. Set amidst inexplicable goings-on along the Pembrokeshire coastline and Cold War coverups from the Ministry of Defence, The Watchers is a gripping paranormal mystery that intertwines the imaginative and the suspenseful with true historical events.

Bestselling author Louise Welsh - The Cutting Room, A Lovely Way to Burn - has captivated readers across twenty languages with her taut, immersive novels and short stories. Having also written for theatre, opera and radio, Welsh joins us to discuss her latest work as editor of Ghost: 100 Stories to Read With the Lights On, a hand-picked collection of spirited shorts from publisher Head of Zeus.

Andrew Michael Hurley has been touted as one to watch with the publication of The Loney, a creeping horror of faith, ritual, landscape and the uncanny. Straddling the Gothic, the generic and the literary, Hurley's debut novel follows a ragtag group on a journey along a desolate coast to a shrine, in search of a cure for mutism. Praised for its atmosphere and prose, The Loney has already been heralded as a modern classic and received rave reviews from fellow authors including Kelly Link, Steven King and Jeff VanderMeer.

On the non-fiction front, we welcome Carolyne Larrington, author of The Land of the Green Man: A Journey through the Supernatural Landscapes of the British Isles. Teaching Fellow at St. John's College, University of Oxford, Dr Larrington weaves a captivating path through our landscape and lore, taking us to a Britain beneath the familiar, populated by a myriad of imaginary beings and ghostly goings-on, drawing in its wake a cultural history of the liminal and the Other.

...and last but by no means least, crime fiction author Stav Sherez - Eleven Days, The Devil's Playground - will be reading from the late William Gay's 'lost' novel Little Sister Death, a Southern Gothic chiller based on the Tennessee 'Bell Witch' legend. An author alternately compared to Cormac McCarthy and Stephen King, Gay's writing is celebrated for the pitch of its darkness and its quality of prose by luminaries such as George Pelecanos, John Connelly and James Franco (who is currently adapting Gay's epic The Long Home for the screen).

Chaired by journalist and author Sam Leith, this is an evening to embrace the macabre and introduce you to some of the best most spine-tingling writing around today.

PLUS we'll be giving away a £100 Foyles Gift Card to the ghoulishly best-dressed audience member on the night!
