New Writing: Daisy Johnson & Sara Taylor
Please note: Due to ongoing disruptions caused by a flood at our Charing Cross Road store, this event has been relocated to the Kingsway Hall Hotel.
Ever on the hunt for new literary voices, we are delighted to bring together two new authors to explore the road to publication and discover what it's like to be an author at the start of your career.
Daisy Johnson's short fiction has appeared in The Boston Review and The Warwick Review and in 2014 she was the recipient of the 2014 AM Heath prize. In the liminal land she depicts in her debut short story collection, Fen, the wild is always close at hand, ready to erupt. This is a place where animals and people commingle and fuse, where curious metamorphoses take place, where myth and dark magic still linger. Daisy Johnson combines English folklore and a contemporary eye, sexual honesty and combustible invention to create a reading experience like no other. Sara Taylor was born in rural Virginia, where she was homeschooled by her evangelical Christian parents. Her debut novel, The Shore, was longlisted for the 2015 Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction and shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year. She is currently working on a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at the University of East Anglia. Her new novel, The Lauras, follows a mother and her child - whose gender is never revealed - on an enigmatic road trip from Virginia to California.
