Foyles Book Club - Grief is a Thing with Feathers
Once a month, Foyles customers and staff get together to discuss a book chosen by its members. It's an opportunity to share our different interpretations on what we're reading, to adamantly disagree, and to meet people united by books.
For our next book club we'll be reading Grief is a Thing with Feathers by Max Porter. In a London flat, two young boys face the unbearable sadness of their mother's sudden death. Their father, a Ted Hughes scholar and scruffy romantic, imagines a future of well-meaning visitors and emptiness. In this moment of despair they are visited by Crow - antagonist, trickster, healer, babysitter. This sentimental bird is drawn to the grieving family and threatens to stay until they no longer need him.
