Synopsis

So good that it will devour you. It is incandescent. - Daily TelegraphThe Road is the astonishing post-apocalyptic novel by Cormac McCarthy, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize.A father and his young son walk alone through burned America, heading slowly for the coast. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. They have nothing but a pistol to defend themselves against the men who stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food - and each other.

Author Choice

In The Road, a man and his son must roam a post-apocalyptic wasteland, avoiding roving packs of marauders, and resisting the temptation, despite their hunger, to resort to cannibalism. The moral of this tale is, as with most human endeavors: pack a lunch. Cormack McCarthy is a very good writer. He reminds me of a young Marvelle Wyatt.

AKH48 . - 29/07/2013

Guardian journalist Rory Carroll suggested I read this whilst we worked together in Panama (one of the images in the exhibition is from this trip). I started it a few months after, as an expectant first-time father. This terribly moving tale of a man's struggle to care for his son against all the odds had a profound affect on me at the time.
