Customer Reviews

Breathtaking pace and imagination make this award-winning debut novel both a pleasure to read and a book that keeps its place in your memory. It is aimed, one assumes, at boys on the cusp of their teenaged years, but it is easy to see how it would appeal to a somewhat older readership - rather as certain American comic strips do. The novel has the added useful quality of encouraging the habit of reading among boys whose instinctive reaction to books of such length might be one of recoil and horror.

Todd Hewitt is the last boy in Prentistown. A town inhabited only by men whose thoughts create a cacophony of Noise from which there is no respite. There are no such things as secrets and Todd has been kept ignorant to protect his innocence. When he senses something in the woods he discovers silence and its source a girl, Viola. They will embark on a journey that will not only take them from Prentistown but towards adulthood. Todd is our hero but a fallible one. He is truly courageous but you will question his actions. In a world where everyone believes that they are fighting for a just cause, Viola and Todd try to survive and do the right thing. But when everyone has their own truths, what is the right thing? Their affection for one another will be used to control them and Viola, through love will make a decision that will threaten their future. Powerful, moving and beautifully written, this is a story about war that is anti-war, that shows but doesn't judge and ultimately allows for hope when there appears to be none. - Sam
