Annie Proulx's highly acclaimed, international bestseller and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Quoyle is a hapless, hopeless hack journalist living and working in New York. When his no-good wife is killed in a spectacular road accident, Quoyle heads for the land of his forefathers - the remotest corner of far-flung Newfoundland. With 'the aunt' and his delinquent daughters - Bunny and Sunshine - in tow, Quoyle finds himself part of an unfolding, exhilarating Atlantic drama. 'The Shipping News' is an irresistible comedy of human life and possibility.

Author Choice

I love this book. It's relatively well-known, but it came out a while ago and people forget terrifyingly quickly. A man rediscovering himself in a small, strange, hilarious community. Compassionate, uplifting, elegant.

Proulx is a master stylist. Using Anglo-Saxon diction and meter (in the second paragraph, for instance, 'hive-spangled, gut roaring' and 'ham knuckle, buttered spuds'), she heaps up content. Sentence fragments and lists cut away everything grammatical, everything unnecessary. And this is appropriate for a protagonist learning to be a reporter, learning to write newspaper headlines. Quoyle is a fabulous creation, unwanted and unloved in a novel that finally is a love story.
