Customer Reviews

This review is being written from the viewpoint of using the book for self study for Inheritance tax, VAT and Individuals. In this new format from TQT, what’s most notable is that in order to extract maximum benefit from the book, one is required to purchase the Workbook (RRP £55) as the exam style questions for each chapter are contained there. In the old format the exam style questions were incorporated into the study text. The reason for this change is that the content within FA11 is such that it would be impractical from a printing perspective to contain all the information in one book which is currently 750+ pages, so budget to spend £140 (£85 + £55) at RRP for these books. The content within the book is laid out in easy to follow chapters but the BPP/TQT style of writing may not be to the taste of all. Some parts of the topics tend to be summarised instead of taught, so the onus is on the individual to grasp the concept themselves, which shouldn’t be a problem if you have studied taxation before. This is where the Workbook is really beneficial. Having said that, there is evidence that the content has been rehashed, some of it badly, as some in-chapter questions asks for knowledge or material that has not been covered yet in the text. This is very frustrating as one questions themselves whether they have missed reading chapter content only to find the answer later on in the chapter. True to BPP tradition there are some mistakes within the book, certainly within the subjects I read, some obvious and some not so obvious but they are not large enough for one to fail an exam, but given how long BPP has being doing this, it is still surprising. Overall the book is fairly well written and easy to understand and is adequate as part of a self study package providing other materials as used. I would also recommend using the legislation during your studies as this will enhance your understanding and give good preparation for the exam.
