Yotam Ottolenghi's path to the world of cooking and baking has been anything but straightforward. Having completed a Masters degree in philosophy and literature whilst working on the news desk of an Israeli daily, he made a radical shift on coming to London in 1997. He started as an assistant pastry chef at the Capital and then worked at Kensington Place, Launceston Place, Maison Blanc and Baker and Spice, before starting his own eponymous group of restaurants/food shops, with branches in Notting Hill, Islington, Belgravia and Kensington. He opened the restaurant NOPI in Piccadilly in 2011.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my other half and was not disappointed. He is a chef and is mad on cook books. The book itself is lovely with a beautiful fabric cover and great prints. The service was good too. The book arrived within the estimated dates and was a very competitive price. All round good order.

I don't get the Guardian which is why I have chosen to get this book. The recipes are varied and interesting (not done one yet - I need some spices) and the pictures (as in his first book) are beautiful. The padded cover is unusual too, I'm not sure how long it will last in the kitchen. It seems to pick up the current mood for 'meatless' meals without being either obvious or preachy. I almost wish I lived near the deli......
