Our staff are a pretty disparate bunch, comprising writers, scientists, students, artists, musicians and academics and yet what they all have in common, apart from their knowledge and experience, is their sheer passion for books. They are the ancient mariners of the book world, except that what they want to pass on is their enthusiasm. Take a wander through their favourites and see why they’ve chosen these particular titles. You can refine your search by combining Staff Picks with Categories or other ‘Browse by’ choices.
FEATURED STAFF PICKS
Shtum will break your heart, give you a better understanding of what it is really like to raise a child with autism, and ultimately lift your spirits. Like the characters, the writing is brave and honest, with flashes of the genuine, yet necessary humour needed to cope in such a difficult situation.
Read it; pass it on; talk about it.
Gary, Buying Team
Eimear McBride’s debut novel is one that demands to be noticed. It is a raw account of the loss and subsequent search for selfhood in a jarred and disruptive stream of consciousness simply addressed to ‘you’. In such a competitive literary age where every author has an instilled desire to be innovative, amazingly, McBride succeeds. I genuinely believe her style is not unique for unique’s sake, but in an attempt to replicate the traumatic interior dialogue of a girl shoved through childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
