Tom McCarthy: Satin Island

Tuesday 10th March 2015 7pm - 8pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Chargeable Event

Award-winning author and intellectual Renaissance Man Tom McCarthy presents the latest of his brilliant fictions, Satin Island, in conversation with influential art critic and curator Hans-Ulrich Obrist.

A novel both of our time and of things to come, Satin Island follows its near-nameless protagonist through a surreal world of corporate consultancy and big data. Tasked with the impossible, with the creation of a grand document for our age, his archivist's sensitivities wander instead to the seemingly disparate phenomena recurring in the news: oil spills, dead parachutists, roller-blade processions...

Exhibiting at once the shock of the new and a laser spotlight on our zeitgeist, McCarthy's dazzling novels -- like Remainder, C, and Men in Space -- are as enthralling as they are informed. Literary and multidisciplinary, McCarthy is both a practicing artist and co-founder, with philosopher Simon Critchley, of the 'semi-fictitious organisation' the International Necronautical Society as well as writer of the 2009 film Double Take, which reframes archive footage of Alfred Hitchcock into a Borges-inspired narrative of the Master director confronting his doppelgänger.

This is an evening of discussion on literature, art and the confluence of the two with an author whose work continues to redefine the boundaries of the form.
