The Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction

The Baillie Gifford (formerly Samuel Johnson) Prize for Non-Fiction was launched in 1999. One of the richest and most prestigious non-fiction prizes in the UK, it is worth £20,000 to the winner. The prize is open to authors of all 'diverse and thought-provoking' non-fiction books published in English in the UK in the areas of current affairs, history, politics, science, sport, travel, biography, autobiography and the arts.

In November 2015, after six years of support from anonymous benefactors, a five-year sponsorship deal with Edinburgh-based investment management partnership Baillie Gifford was announced.

The 2015 winner was Steve Silberman's Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and How to Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently.

The 2016 longlist was announced on 21st September. The shortlist was announced on Monday 17 October and the winner, revealed on15 November, was Philippe Sands for East West Street: on the Origins of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity,

The judging panel comprised former BBC Economics Editor, Stephanie Flanders (Chair) together with Philip Ball, science writer and author; Jonathan Derbyshire, executive comment editor of the Financial Times; Dr Sophie Ratcliffe, scholar, writer and literary critic and Rohan Silva, co-founder of the social enterprise, Second Home.
