A first look at Grand Central Birmingham

30th September 2015

Today was the day we were finally able to open to our doors to customers at our new shop at Grand Central Birmingham. Here's a first look at the new arrival to the Foyles family.

The new station at Grand Central Birmingham is the culmination of a £750m overhaul by architects AZPML. It's part of the Big City Plan for Birmingham, launched in 2010.

See that little green square on the upper level, to the right of John Lewis? That's us!

As with our shops in Westfield Stratford and Waterloo, we've rescued hundreds of books from the ignominy of being pulped and given them a noble new life as part of the Cash Desk.

The end of the alphabet in the Fiction section and the beginning of Crime. The red and black geometric shapes on the display unit to the left are cunningly disguised drawers, to ensure extra stock of bestsellers is readily to hand.

A view across some of the non-fiction on offer. We're curious to find out how the interests of the good folk of Birmingham compare to those who visit our London and Bristol shops.

Our pride and joy: the Children's Department. You can join us on Saturday 17th October for the official opening by Cressida Cowell, author of the 'How to Train Your Dragon' series. It's free, but we strongly recommend you book places in advance; you can do that here.

We're rather keen on these new-style book displays (although we haven't worked out quite what to call them yet).

We hope you'll enjoy our 'author pods', which will feature all sorts of authors reading from their books. They're cleverly designed to activate when you stand on a designated spot in front of them. The sound is carefully directed so that you can hear them, but those browsing around you can't.

These light fittings have proved quite a talking point at our Waterloo shop, so we thought we'd use them again in Birmingham. The text is from Dr Johnson's Dictionary: Samuel Johnson is one of Birmingham's most celebrated literary sons.

Five years in five minutes

This wonderful time lapse video shows the huge amount of work that's taken place to transform Birmingham New Street Station over the last five years.
