#FoylesFive: Poetry Collections

6th August 2017 - Jay Moran

#FoylesFive: Poetry Collections

Poetry: a cherished friend or an abhorrent enemy; you either love or hate it. With this in mind, I've compiled a little list that can either add to someone's collection or start it; to either strengthen someone's love or begin it.

A Poem For Every Night of the Year

This is a varied collection containing a multitude of authors, their voices are all completely different and unique. So if you're not sure what someone will like, this collection gives them a lot of options. They may find a poet they subsequently hold onto and fall in love with, and you can take all the credit for it.

Sylvia Plath, poems chosen by Carol Ann Duffy

Plath was my first entryway into poetry. Until this point poems were silly, boisterous rhymes, striking no chords whatsoever... and then I listened to a recording of Plath reading 'Daddy' and all of a sudden, poetry was a new world blossoming swiftly before me. I would recommend this wonderful edition. 'Lady Lazarus', 'Poppies in October' and 'Edge' are great poems to start with.

Milk and Honey by Rumi Kaur

Milk and Honey is a wonderful introduction to poetry for those who aren't too keen or confident with reading it. It's a sincere collection that reads as though freshly removed from the heart. Kaur takes a flurry of different emotions and creates a fierce storm that is simultaneously beautiful, frightening, and powerful. You don't have to start with the classics to fall in love with poetry, and this is a prime example of modern poetry paving the way for new poets as well as readers.

The Complete Poetry by Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou is a significant figure in the writing world. Her name alone evokes respect and love. Angelou's poetry invites the reader in. There is such a genuine warmth to her voice, in all of her writings but especially her poetry. Whether her most avid reader or a pure beginner, this book is certain to move and inspire.

Memories by Lang Leav

Lang Leav, like Rumi Kaur, is a modern voice that successfully reaches people, whether they would call themselves a reader of poetry or not. Her other books, Love and Lullabies are also excellent but Memories is possibly her best so far. The writing is eloquent, sweet, melancholic, and romantic all at once. The poems are usually very short, giving them a more profound impact as well as making them easier to read, their meaning immediately reaching home, and they will definitely stay with you.

Kirsty Logan's second novel, The Gloaming, is a swirling tale threaded through with magic, heartbreak, love and mermaids. It is studded with evocative but perhaps unfamiliar words, adding atmosphere, mood and expression. Exclusively for Foyles, she has written about some of these Scottish words, that head up each chapter of the book.
