The Booktrust Children's Awards

Booktrust logoBest New Illustrators Award announced!

As well as administering the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and the Blue Peter Book Awards (not to mention a number of major adult literary awards), the national independent charity Book Trust has two children's book awards of its own, the Book Trust Early Years Awards and the Book Trust Teenage Prize, both aimed at bringing books to as wide a range of young readers as possible. Winners are announced each September.

For the first five years, there was a single Early Years Award. Since 2004, it has been divided into three categories: Best Book for Babies under One Year Old, the Best Picture Book for Pre-School Children up to Five Years of Age and the Best Emerging Illustrator of a Book for Pre-school Children up to Five Years of Age. Books must have been published in the UK between July of the year prior to the award and the end of the following June. Each category winner receives £2000. Sam Lloyd's victories in 2003 and 2006 make her the only double winner.

The Book Trust Teenage Prize is a single award, given to the best book aimed at readers between twelve and sixteen, and is run with the support of the Reading Agency. The panel of five judges is joined by four readers from the target age group to decide the winner. All genres of books are eligible, including poetry, short stories, graphic novels and non-fiction titles. The eligibility rules are the same as for the Early Years Awards and the winning author receives £2500.

In JUne 2011, Booktrust was forced to announce the suspension of the two awards, owing to funding cuts by the Department of Education. Alternative sources of funding are currently being sought.
