Doctor Who first appeared on the BBC in black-and-white in 1963, with William Hartnell the first to play the time-traveller from Gallifrey. His was the first Doctor to encounter the Daleks, the mutant cyborgs from the planet Skaro who are the very embodiment of TV villainy. The series continued to scare and entertain viewers, and introduce a wide range of new Doctors and monsters for over twenty five years. The Doctor finally returned to our TVs in 2005 under the aegis of Russell T Davis first with Christopher Eccleston and then David Tennant offering a whole new generation of children the opportunity to spend Saturday tea-time peeking out fearfully from behind the sofa, and introducing us to the Weeping Angels and the Vashta Nerada. The Steven Moffat era has seen Matt Smith as the eleventh incarnation, Peter Capaldi as the twelfth and current Doctor, and of course the mysterious War Doctor played by John Hurt. Doctor Who remains hugely popular both in the United Kingdom and around the world and is now the longest-running TV science fiction series ever. So pick a Doctor… don’t blink… and stay out of the shadows…!
