Disaster Capitalism: Antony Loewenstein in conversation with Ewa Jasiewicz

Saturday 24th October 2015 4pm - 5pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Chargeable Event

Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein presents Disaster Capitalism: Making a Killing out of Catastrophe in conversation with journalist Ewa Jasiewicz.

Travelling far and wide, in Disaster Capitalism author and activist Loewenstein maps how disaster has become big business. In Papua New Guinea, he sees a local community forced to rebel against predatory resource companies and NGOs. He debates with Western contractors in Afghanistan, meets the locals in post-earthquake Haiti, and in Greece finds a country at the mercy of vulture profiteers. Talking to immigrants stuck in limbo in Britain, visiting immigration centers in America, Loewenstein assesses the mechanisms formed to help corporations bleed what profits they can from economic crisis.

In a time of global human crisis, Loewenstein argues, profit has become the top priority as countries privatise relief responses and corporations, with the aid of media and political elites, grow more powerful than governments. Discussing this worldwide situation with Jasiewicz, Loewenstein takes us on a journey through the secret world of privatized detention centres, militarized private security, and other examples of corporations cashing in on disasters to depict a landscape where the vulnerable are the world's most valuable commodity.

The author will also take questions from the audience and sign copies of Disaster Capitalism: Making a Killing out of Catastrophe.
