A Notable Woman: The Romantic Journals of Jean Lucey Pratt with Simon Garfield, Louise Brealey and Cathy Rentzenbrink

Wednesday 4th November 2015 7pm - 8pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Chargeable Event

Join author Simon Garfield, actress Louise Brealey and writer Cathy Rentzenbrink as they present A Notable Woman, the life and writings of Jean Lucey Pratt. One of the inspirations behind Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life, and reading like a mash up between Virginia Woolf and Caitlin Moran, Pratt's extraordinary journals chronicle one ordinary woman's life throughout the twentieth century.

'What makes Jean’s journals special is the intimacy and frankness of her account of a life seen from the inside: you want to protect her, and simultaneously to slap her and cheer her on. Timeless, funny and utterly absorbing.' – Hilary Mantel

'What a find! Jean’s voice sings across the decades, fresh, vivid and desperate for love - a woman with so much to offer, who kicks against the stuffy society in which she finds herself. I grew to love her sharp observation, her vulnerability and her passion.' – Deborah Moggach

Jean began her diaries aged 15 in April 1925 and continued writing until her death in 1986. Through her writing we see Britain hurtling through a period of unbridled transformation, and witness the shifting landscape for women in society. As her words propel us back in time, A Notable Woman becomes a unique slice of living, breathing British history and a revealing private chronicle of life in the twentieth century.

Editor of the volume and non-fiction author extraordinaire Simon Garfield - Just My Type - will be in conversation with author and Project Director at Quick Reads Cathy Rentzenbrink, with readings from Sherlock actress Louise Brealey.
