Book of the Month
36 Arguments for the Existence of GodRebecca Goldstein
A wonderfully intelligent and hugely entertaining novel about the place of faith in a secular world. Psychologist Cass Seltzer, born into a Hasidic Jewish family, has made his name with a controversial bestseller called 'The Varieties of Religious Illusion'. Reluctantly visiting the insular community where he was brought up, he encounters Azarya, a mathematical prodigy whose abilities are being stifled by his being groomed as his Chief Rabbi father's heir. Cass decides that the boy needs to experience the intellectual challenge of academic life. While Azarya finds himself torn between two diametrically opposed possible futures, Cass finds his own views under close public scrutiny. As a fascinating appendix, the novel includes the 36 arguments for God's existence, and how Cass finds fault with each.

Current Favourites - Original Fiction
Britain's favourite literary writer, author of Atonement, returns with his first satirical novel, a sharply observant and blackly humorous look at the fierce environmental debate currently dividing opinion. A Nobel prize-winning physicist, trading on past glories and onto his fifth wife, finds that a position on a quango tackling global warming offers him the opportunity to save his career, his marriage and perhaps even the world.

Dmitry Bykov is one of Russia's most celebrated contemporary authors and, perhaps dangerously, an outspoken critic of Vladimir Putin. His first novel to be published in the UK is a vicious satire on the current regime, set in a possible future where Russia is ruled by a right-wing cult and the racial tensions have seen minorities driven from Moscow. As everyday life collapses, four unlikely couples seek to escape the chaos and hatred.

AAwarded the 2009 Man Booker Prize, the best-selling winner ever is now available in paperback. Hilary Mantel, one of our most consistently brilliant writers, weaves a gripping tale of intrigue in the court of Henry VIII. A music teacher is suspended for an affair with a pupil, or so the story goes. Catton tells it two ways: as it happened and as portrayed by a local drama college in a student production. At first the two accounts are discrete, the truth banal and its artistic depiction luridly ornamented, but the distinctions blur and the reader's loyalties begin to stray. Simply one of the most outstanding debut novels to be published in recent years.

The theme linking the five stories making up Ishiguro's latest book is the tipping point in life where one feels that the best of life now lies in the past. Tales such as that of the Venetian café guitarist hired by a once famous crooner to help serenade his wife leave a ghostly imprint. Like balloons caught on the wind, each character is lost to the uncertainty of the future.
