The Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award

Logo 2015The Financial Times and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award (originally the FT/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year) was established in 2005 to reward books offering compelling and enjoyable insights into modern business.

The prize rewards the winner with £30,000 and £10,000 goes to each of the other shortlisted authors. A longlist is announced in August, a shortlist, usually of six books, in September and a winner in late October or November.

The inaugural winner was The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century by the three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Thomas Friedman; the book became a worldwide bestseller, although its sales were dwarfed by another book on the shortlist, Freakonomics, a title credited with kickstarting the market for business books aimed at the more general reader.

In 2011, Esther Duflo, co-author with Abhijit Banerjee of winning title, Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty, became the first woman to win the prize.

The 2015 winner was The Rise of the Robots by Martin Ford. Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times, said, 'The Rise of the Robots is a tightly-written and deeply-researched addition to the public policy debate du jour and du demain. The judges didn’t agree with all of the conclusions, but were unanimous on the verdict and the impact of the book.'
