First published in 1996, A Game of Thrones is the first book in G.R.R. Martin's award-winning and bestselling epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. Since then, the original planned trilogy has expanded into what will eventually be a seven part saga. So far five volumes have been published, and Martin is currently working on the sixth.
The books have become even more popular since being adapted for television by HBO. The sensational first season aired in 2011, with one hotly anticipated season a year sunsequently. Season 6 is exploding onto our screens now.
As Ben in the Web Team says: Even if you’re not a fan of fantasy, it's hard not to be swept up in this brutal and intricately plotted tale. Martin brings a real atmosphere of historical realism to his imagined world but it was the vividly realised characters and the depiction of the labyrinthine political structures they move within that kept me reading to the end (and on to the next instalment). Brilliantly paced and relentlessly thrilling, this book really does deserve its classic status.
