Haruki MurakamiRead the first chapter here

Haruki Murakami was born in Kyoto in 1949, the son of two Japanese literature teachers. From an early age he has been influenced by Western music and literature, notably Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan, something that is very much apparent in his writing and goes some way to explaining how he has become by far the most popular Japanese writer in many Western nations, including the United Kingdom. But he is also widely praised by critics, who cite him as one of the greats in postmodern fiction.

His first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, was published in 1979, and was both a critical and commercial success. His subsequent fiction includes Norwegian Wood, which propelled him to huge popularity in his homeland, particularly amongst younger readers, and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, for which he won the prestigious Yomiuri Literary Award.

He has also written many short stories, which have appeared in magazines and journals worldwide, and two non-fiction titles, What I Talk about When I Talking about Running, an autobiographical work that chronicles his love of long-distance running, and Underground, in which he investigates the Aum Shinriyko cult's sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995.

He has also translated many writers from English into Japanese, including Raymond Carver, F Scott Fitzgerald Truman Capote, J D Salinger, Raymond Chandler and Ursula le Guin.

His latest novel, 1Q84, was published in three volumes in Japan, Books One and Two simultaneously, followed by Book Three almost a year later. The first volume sold a million copies in Japan in just one month and was widely hailed as his masterpiece.

His British publisher, Harvill Secker, has released Books One and Two together in one volume, to be followed by Book Three on 25th October. Foyles is delighted to be able to offer exclusive limited editions of both, with the pages edged in Foyles red, elegantly complementing the stylish cover designs.

Only 1500 copies of each have ben printed and they are available only through Foyles. Scroll down to order your copies now to ensure that you don't miss the opportunity to acquire these beautiful and highly collectable books.
