The Kate Greenaway Medal

Click to see the Carnegie Medal, for older children's fiction, run in parallel with this award

The Kate Greenaway MedalThe Kate Greenaway Medal, first awarded in 1955, rewards the outstanding illustration of a children's book. It is named after the distinguished Victorian book illustrator of the same name.

The winner receives a gold medal and £500 worth of books to donate to a school or public library of their choice. Since 2000, the winner has also personally received £5000, funded by a bequest from children's book collector Colin Mears.

Winners are chosen by a panel of children's librarians, members of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, who take into account feedback from pupils at selected schools. CILIP also administers the Carnegie Medal, which rewards non-illustrated children's books, and together these constitute the most prestigious British awards for children's books. Winners are announced in July, rewarding books published in the previous calendar year.

The list of prize winners is a tribute the Britain's long tradition of beautifully illustrated children's titles. Winners include Edward Ardizzone, Raymond Briggs, Janet Ahlberg, Quentin Blake, Michael Foreman, Helen Oxenbury and Lauren Child as well as the ten two-time winners, Victor Ambrus, John Burningham, Anthony Browne, Charles Keeping, Shirley Hughes, Jan Pienkowski, P J Lynch, Emily Gravett, Helen Cooper and Chris Riddell.

On two occasions, including 1955, the first year of the award, and 1958, no book has been deemed of sufficient quality to receive the Medal.

To celebrate the prize's 50th anniversary in 2007, children's book experts selected their ten best winners of the Medal. A poll was then conducted to find the most popular winner; this was won by Shirley Hughes' Dogger.

The 2016 winner, announced 20th June, was Chris Riddell for The Sleeper and the Spindle, making him the first ever triple winner of either this award or the Carnegie Award. Read more here.
