Alan Moore's interpretation of the Jack the Ripper mystery is brilliant, even if, like me, you have no particular interest in its subject matter. While it is meticulously researched - the explanatory notes add almost half again to the length of the book - and fits closely enough with the facts of the case to make the more paranoid reader (i.e. me) worry about what else the Masons might be up to, its appeal lies more in the combination of Moore's, as ever, brilliant storytelling and Campbell's perfectly judged artwork: the scratchy black-and-white panels create a wonderfully chilling vision of Victorian London that perfectly complements the story. - Gayle Charing Cross Rd Bookshop - 08/08/2011
