Product Synopsis

'Dazzling, gritty brilliance. This is a novel of scorching distinction' Sunday Times Under an endless and unforgiving sky, four travellers enter the Judean desert in search of redemption. Instead, amidst the barren rocks, they are met by a dangerous man, Musa, and fall under his dark influence. But there is a fervent, solitary figure also sharing their landscape, denying the temptations of his neighbours, and, ultimately, the needs of his own body. So begin forty days and nights in one of the most inhospitable terrains on earth. 'One of the finest novels I've read in years' The Times 'Completely captivating' Literary Review 'Absolutely compelling' Observer 'Stunning. A writer of hallucinatory skill' John Updike

Customer Reviews

This was our Book Club choice for last month and it received our best rating over a ten month period. We found the theme disturbing where a group of individuals find themselves sharing wilderness depravation of all comfort in an effort to emerge cleansed and refreshed from their individual life burdens. The key character, Musa, is a cruel and manipulative bully who tries to get each person under his control. The most naive and innocent member of the group resists all temptations thrown at him. The theme closely resembles the fight in christanity between good and evil which one member of our group found distastful but it certainly leant itself to an unusual and intriguing plot. The women in the story successfully unite against Musa's bullying so good prevails. The story is so well written that you can feel their discomfort and their temptations and identify with each character as they fight against Musa as well as against their personal torments. Our group scored this book as 4 star and thoroughly recommend it.

Staff Choice

It is two millennia ago and four people have travelled into the arid wasteland of the Judean desert for forty days of spiritual reflection. The subsequent arrival of a young man called Jesus seems to bring Musa, a heartless and abusive husband to Miri, back from the brink of imminent death. Crace's literary mirage sees history and myth commingle, pricking the reader's senses with the essence of each sharp stone and each acrid breath.
