Little Red Riding Hood is one of my all time favourite fairy tales, so when I discovered Sisters Red I had high hopes; fortunately, I wasn't disappointed. What I loved most about Sisters Red is that it has its roots in the original version of the Red Riding story, where the wolf was in fact a werewolf, and was meant as a cautionary tale for young women to avoid the attentions of strange men. Jackson Pearce’s version is smart, slick, shocking and brutal, with shades of Angela Carter in its storytelling. The heroines, Scarlet and Rose, are strong and independent, forced to grow up in a brutal world that exists unseen but side by side with the everyday, and the werewolves of that world are first and foremost predators that care only for blood, and have no wish to play the hero. - Neil Charing Cross Rd Bookshop - 24/03/2011
