Product Synopsis

"V for Vendetta" - the inspiration for the controversial movie smash hit - is one of the accomplishments that cemented Alan Moore's reputation as comics' foremost writer, and now returns in a stunning new edition.Originally published in 1990, "V for Vendetta" is a frightening and powerful story about the loss of freedom and individuality set in a totalitarian England. Written against a background of third-term Thatcherism and tabloid rants against minorities, this is a work of startling clarity...everything that comics weren't supposed to be.It is a terrifying portrait of resistance and the power of the individual. Superbly illustrated by artist David Lloyd (Kickback), this edition includes early sketches and art by Lloyd.

Customer Reviews

The book is about a fascist state being resisted by a very interesting character. It reminds me of 1984 in ways but V for Vendetta is a classic in its own right. I really enjoyed reading this and recommend this book but with a warning: this is a dark tale of people and the state and doesn't fill you with hope and joy! So enjoy yourself reading this one.

A stunning piece of graphic storytelling full of gritty British dystopianism (most of which was lost in the movie, Steven Rea's performance apart, and is indeed diluted in the colour print - the original serialised comic was released in a beautiful stylised monochrome that perfectly fitted it's 1980's underground ambience). The perfect graphic novel for anyone that doesn't like graphic novels, as different from anime or superhero genres as can be ... some might see it as perhaps a little dated now, but just like Farenhiet 451 or Orwell's 1984 it retains all the passion and paranoia that we probably need more than ever in these times of bland face(less)-book homogeneity and twittering conformity, and is at heart a gripping and artful story with unexpectedly sympathetic and rounded characters on all sides, and an elegant episodic rhythm, without any of the distracting contrivances of Watchmen or other later icons of the genre. An utterly worthwhile read that I desperately hope one day will be available in the original black and white, but until then, this is as good as it gets.

Staff Choice

In a sentence, this book is about the UK as a fascist dystopia. It works easily as a fable for hegemony at any point in history, illustrating the way in which powers that be create fears to divide and control people. In addition to thoughts on hegemony, this book crams in much about the power of ideas, integrity, love, roses, not apologising to anyone, and the importance of deciding for yourself who the enemy really is. - Cindy.
