Product Synopsis

This book is the story of an area of landscape in the English Midlands from earliest prehistory to around AD 900. Although it looks like a typical rural landscape, archaeological research, much of it in advance of quarrying, has revealed that this area has a long and remarkable history of occupation stretching back to the Ice Age. In particular at Catholme the project has revealed spectacular monuments from the Neolithic and Bronze Age (including a 'woodhenge-type' monument, a 'sunburst' monument and a cursus) that represent a regional expression of the monumental traditions of the age of Stonehenge.

The folksy title of this book is expanded in the workaday subtitle: The Archaeology of Catholme and the Trent-Tame Confluence. It is a period by period summary of landscape use in the Staffordshire / Derbyshire border region, funded by the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund, which compensates local communities impacted by the extractive industries by contributing to archaeological research.

The story told here is not only how to go about the systematic study of a landscape, but also how to find out in what way the landscape has been used by humans from the end of the last Ice Age until the Viking period, which is where the book ends. This region’s equivalent to the Stonehenge landscape is the Catholme Ceremonial Complex.

The surprise is the Late Neolithic / Early Bronze Age 'sunburst monument' depicted on the book’s front cover. This remarkable 16m wide ring ditch is surrounded by 12 radiating lines of up to five pits extended over a total diameter of nearly 60m, the result, perhaps, of local experimentation in the creation of burial monuments.
