Book of the Month
The Rolling Thunder LogbookSam Shepard
On the eve of the United States' bicentennial, Bob Dylan took his Rolling Thunder Review - a rag-tag variety show featuring acts such as Joni Mitchell, T-Bone Burnett, Allen Ginsberg, Mick Ronson, Joan Baez and Arlo Guthrie - around 22 north-eastern cities. Playwright Sam Shepard was hired to write the script of a Fellini-esque movie to be based on the tour and his diary of events was published soon after, becoming a classic amongst Dylan fans. To celebrate this 30th anniversary of its publication, this is a completely redesigned version of that book, with 40 new photos from official photographer Ken Regan. Capturing the camaraderie, isolation, head games and pill-popping mayhem of the time, this is a must for any Dylan aficionado.

Chopin's legacy to western music remains as strong as ever, but little is known of the man himself. Adam Zamoyski cuts through the mythology that surrounds him to provide an accurate portrait of his life, including recent discoveries about the state of his health, as well as placing him within the intellectual and spiritual environment of his day.

History has some alarming instances of the use of music as a weapon:
the US has used 'psychoacoustic correction' in attempts to confuse and subdue Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, the Branch Davidians at Waco and at Guantanamo Bay. Goodman explores the potency of sound, for both positive and negative effect, as well as such phenomena as sonic branding, sound art and the concept of unsound.

Luke Haines, frontman of The paperback edition of the sensational first full biography of one of the greatest female artists of the 20th century. Her life was a catalogue of ill temper, both her own and others', and abuse. Turned down by the music school which she'd hoped would give her the classical training she desired, she felt herself to be a life-long victim of racism. This is the story behind the mercurial, mesmerising performer..

John Coltrane rarely told his quartet what to do and Miles Davis famously gave his group only the barest instructions before recording Kind of Blue. Jazz musicians are often wary of discussing their craft, for fear of undermining the ephemeral essence of improvisation. But here Ben Ratcliff coaxes revelations from Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Branford Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Wayne Shorter and many more.

It is said bluesman Robert Johnson, cited as a major influence by just about every blues musician who came after, sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads at midnight in return for his legendary prowess. His death by poisoning at 27 (probably at the hands of a jealous husband) only fuelled the myth. Tom Graves uncovers the true facts about his life and music and explores his potent legacy on blues music and its descendants.
